AFL Pie Contest...A Little History

Since 1999 AFL has ran a contest to guess what pies Dave's mom will make each Thanksgiving. We thought since Dave seemed to have so much fun guessing, we would get in on the action as well. The contest started off as a thread on our little newsgroup and quickly got out of hand, even with James Langdell trying his best to manage it. In order to make it easier to vote, and to keep thread length to a manageable size, Helen Read, James Langdell and I moved the contest off the newsgroup. James and Helen set up rules, Helen put together a lovely website for voting, and I, as always, was the pie-making-bitch-goddess who would bake a pie for the lucky person who correctly guessed what Dorothy whipped up in her kitchen.

The website idea has been incredibly successful. We've had several years of satisfied winners with the only real hitch being that first year in 1999. That year's contest had a foreign winner (damn Canadians) and due to customs regulations we couldn't send a real pie. I did send a virtual pie and we pretended it was good enough. If you're interested in some of the great stories around the contests, and maybe get a pie recipie or two, please click on the links below to read the contest reports.
