AFL Dave's Mom's Thanksgiving Pie Thanksgiving-Pie-Guessing Contest - Results 2002
This year we had an undisputed winner for our little contest. Keith Rose out scored everyone by correctly guessing Dave's Mom would make a raspberry pie. (She made a raspberry pie and a pumpkin pie) We didn't even have to go to our tie-breaker question, "How many times will the word 'pie' be uttered during the show?" Helen and I were on the edge of our chairs listening excitedly, checking off every "pie" uttered by Paul, Dave, Dorothy and the rest of the crew. Turns out we had 58 utterances. Annette came the closest with a guess of 56 and the pie committee, conferencing by the very cool three-way calling feature, felt we should allow her to use a special signature for the rest of the year.

Those of you that know Annette will get it. Those of you that don't, well, just move on.
For his excellent guess, Keith is the recipient of a home-baked pie from yours truly. At first, Keith asked for an apple pie, double crust, the whole works. Later I found out through a newsgroup post that Keith really wanted a raspberry pie, but didn't want to bother me with such a request. Well, we finally got it straight what he really wanted and a raspberry pie was put together specifically for him. Now I don't usually give away my recipes, but this is such a good one I thought I'd share this year.
| Pastry 1 1/2 c. unbleached all purpose flour 2 t sugar 1/2 ground cinnamon 1 t grated orange zest 5 1/2 T unsalted butter, cold 3 T Crisco 1/4 c. ice water |
Filling 1 quart raspberries, fresh or frozen 1 c. sugar 1/3 c. Chambord 1/4 c. cornstarch 1 T lemon juice pinch of salt 1 t milk 1 egg yolk |
Preheat over to 425.
Prepare pastry dough:
Combine flour, cinnamon, sugar, and orange zest; mix well. Cut Crisco and butter into flour until it resembles coarse crumbs. Add ice water 1 T at a time until mixture easily forms a ball. Chill slightly to aid in rolling.
Prepare the filling:
Gently combine berries and sugar. In a separate bowl, mix Chambord and cornstarch until smooth. Gently add this mixture, along with the lemon juice to the berries and sugar.
Roll out dough on a lightly floured surface into an 11" circle. Transfer to a 9-inch pie plate and trim excess dough leaving a 1" overhang. Pour filling into pie shell.
Take remaining dough and roll into an 11" circle and cut into 1/2" wide lattice stripes. Weave lattice strips over top, fold ends over the edge and trim away excess pastry. Crimp edges.
Blend egg yolk and milk and brush lattice top careful with mixture.
Place pie on a baking sheet in oven and bake on upper rack for 15 minutes. Reduce heat to 350 and bake until crust is golden and berries bubble, 35-40 minutes.
A few pics just to tease you all out there who aren't getting pie from me.

![]() Postal guy is all smiles as he sends the package on it's overnight run to OH. |
Proof I shouldn't be allowed near a hot oven door after I've been nipping on the Chambord. Ouch!
Aside from the injury, I had a great time making the official AFL Dave's Mom's Thanksgiving Pie Thanksgiving-Pie-Guessing Contest
Be sure to take a look at Keith's Pie Report page and see how it went on his end.
